Clownfish Selection

Q

Dear Aquaworld,

I recently set up a 100 gallon bowfront, fish only saltwater tank.  I really want  some clownfish to go in it.  I was wondering can you tell me what species to get, if I can mix them, and how many of each to get.

Thanks,

Courtney Abrahamsen

A

Dear Courtney,

Ocellaris Clownfish.

A pair of Ocellaris Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) tending their eggs.

Your aquarium is large enough to support any species of clownfish.  I can never recommend more than a pair of one species for an aquarium unless the aquarium is very large (over 400 gallons (1500 l)).  Clownfish are very territorial towards other species of clownfish, as well as their own species.  As a general rule I only keep one pair per tank.  It is always risky trying to mix the species and adding more than a pair, but it has been done successfully.
